Are Digestion Problems Causing Your Pain?

If you are not processing food properly through your digestive tract, you won’t be able to digest and absorb the nutrients they contain. Let’s look at digestive problems in two broad categories: bad digestion, and poor absorption.

Bad Digestion

Bad digestion is so common in the United States that it supports a huge industry devoted to selling antacids and prescription medications. Eight areas where you might be experiencing problems of bad digestion include:

1- Not enough stomach acid. As you get older, your stomach is less able to produce acid. You need stomach acid to absorb minerals and vitamin B12, a vitamin that is essential for producing red blood cells in the bone marrow.

2- Damage to the stomach lining caused by an infection, such as the bacteria Helicobacter.

3- Pernicious anemia due to a loss of parietal cells in your stomach that release the acid.

4- Not enough digestive enzymes. Digestive enzymes are activated by stomach acid to break down food into its constituent parts. Antacids impair the function of these vital enzymes.

5- Not enough of the right bacteria in your gut. Without beneficial bacteria in your gut, your body can’t produce some key vitamins, like biotin, or vitamin K. A deficiency of vitamin K can be as big a risk factor for heart attack as smoking!

6- Problems in your pancreas. Your pancreas produces enzymes that break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. Sometimes the pancreas simply doesn’t produce enough of the proper amounts and proportions of digestive juices you need for good digestion. Or there are many conditions and lifestyle habits can impair the function of the pancreas. These include:

• Excessive alcohol consumption, which causes pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) that can result in scarring and damage.

• Gallstones obstruct the pancreas' drainage, forcing juices to back up into the pancreas, gradually causing it to digest itself!

• Autoimmune disease causes your body to attack the pancreas.

• A congenital ailment such as cystic fibrosis.

7- Problems with your liver. Your liver produces bile, which emulsifies fat so that it can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Bile is stored in the gallbladder. When you eat, the gallbladder squeezes and releases bile into the duodenum (the first segment of the intestinal tract) and the intestine. If you have had your gallbladder removed or have a damaged liver, this process can be blocked.

8- Heartburn and colitis are actually thirst signals of the human body. The use of antacids or tablet medications in the treatment of this pain does not correct dehydration, and the body continues to suffer as a result of its water shortage. Treating these problems with pill medications will, in time, produce inflammation of the stomach and duodenum, hiatal hernia, ulceration, and eventually cancers in the gastrointestinal tract, including the liver and pancreas.

Poor Absorption

Even if you eat the best possible diet, the nutrients are lost if you are not absorbing them. Here are five areas where you may be experiencing problems with absorption.

1- Gluten intolerance and celiac disease. The most common cause of poor absorption is gluten intolerance and celiac disease, affecting one out of every 120 people in the U.S. and Europe. Celiac disease is caused by an allergy to gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats. The disease causes poor absorption by damaging the lining of the small intestine, and stimulates the immune system, which creates an inflammatory reaction. This disorder also causes hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), diarrhea, slow growth in children, and autoimmune diseases such as diabetes and thyroid disorders.

2- “Leaky Gut.” Leaky gut refers to a situation where the gut wall is irritated and starts to seep incompletely digested proteins into the bloodstream, triggering an immune response which can result in sensitivities to a variety of foods.

3- Food sensitivities. Any protein that is not recognized as yours (belonging to your body) is considered a potential invader and your immune system attacks it. So if you eat a protein, but your digestion does not break it down into its component building blocks (amino acids), you will have an immune reaction, which can cause inflammatory bowel disease, acne, arthritis, eczema, psoriasis, hives, liver problems and more. When you continue to eat that food, your body makes antibodies against it, reactivating the immune response every time you eat that food.

4- Autoimmune diseases. When the antibodies linger in your bloodstream, they can miss their target and attack other parts of your body, such as your thyroid, pancreas, or joints.

5- Malnutrition. If you are not able to absorb nutrients due to the problems we’ve just discussed, you will suffer from malnutrition. Although we are a nation that is over-fed, we are also a nation that is under-nourished. Understanding the various problems that can happen during the process of digestion helps us understand how this can be true.
