Don’t Manage Fibromyalgia Pain With Medication!
Treating the pain of fibromyalgia with drugs is nuts! That is my never-to-be-humble opinion, but let’s look at the two drugs for fibromyalgia that are heavily advertised. Lyrica® and Cymbalta®.
Lyrica®
contains a warning that your “family or other caregivers should be alert to changes in your mood or symptoms.” Why? Because this drug can give people thoughts about suicide!
Think about that. A drug that makes you think about ending it all.
Another serious side effect is muscle pain, weakness or tenderness. Isn’t muscle pain, weakness and tenderness the reason you are taking this medication???People on patientslikeme.com report the reason they stopped taking Lyrica was that 1) the side effects were too severe (56%) and 2) the drug didn’t seem to work! (32%) A drug that makes you want to kill yourself, can increase the very symptoms you’re seeking relief from, and it doesn’t even work for a third of the people who took it??!!
Yes, nuts.
How about the other drug that is heavily advertised for fibromyalgia? Well,
Cymbalta®
advises you to call your doctor at once if you have “mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or if you feel impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), more depressed, or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself.” Other serious side effects include symptoms that range from stomach pain to coma!
HELLO??
Again, people on patientslikeme.com report the reason they stopped taking Cymbalta was that 1) the side effects were too severe (65%) and 2) the drug didn’t seem to work! (40%), both measures even higher than for Lyrica. The bottom line is, drugs interfere with, rather than support, your body’s ability to heal itself. Reason with me on this. If the smoke alarm in your house goes off, you don’t unplug it to stop that horrible noise, right? But that is the effect that drugs have! They stop the alarm. They cover up the symptoms, while the fire continues to grow.
Pain is your body’s way of telling you that something is not right!
To free yourself from chronic pain, you must become your own health advocate, educate yourself about the causes and solutions for your pain, and take control of your life.
Drugs Aren’t the Only Remedy for Your Fibromyalgia
There are many non-drug pain management tools and techniques to help you cope with your pain while you work to eliminate its source. I’m sure this is true, because I’ve personally tried out nearly every one of them!

80% of chronic pain has its roots in lifestyle habits. When you understand this fact, you also can understand that you have the power to change those habits, and thereby improve your pain situation. These lifestyle habits include:The way you live in your body; how you breathe, your posture, how you stand and move, how you hold physical and emotional tension in your tissues, what you eat and drink, how much sleep and rest you get. Stress is always reflected in the body, at all levels: biochemical, neurological, and physiological. Emotions, attitudes and beliefs manifest themselves in our physiology. This has been a 20-year journey, and I’m not there yet.
