Does Your Pain Have a Message For You?
The mind-body connection is like Alice’s looking glass. It’s possible your physical problem may be a message about an emotional issue. Or, your emotions may be a message of a physical issue. It can be hard to figure out which way to look at an issue. Mind-body? Body-mind?
It’s not necessarily psychosis!
A growing body of research is indicating that unstable emotions may indicate chemical imbalances in the body. Emotional symptoms can develop as a direct result of deficiency of brain and body chemicals. These vital chemicals create our stable emotions, behaviors, thoughts, and sanity. As we saw with nutritional requirements, optimal levels of natural brain chemicals can vary widely from one individual to another.Amino acids convert to brain neurotransmitters, which create the chemical language of the brain. Neurotransmitters enable your brain to function, to have memory, emotions, thoughts, and feelings. Neurotransmitters control depression, produce sleep, and create energy. These chemical substances are the basis of sanity and well-being. Amino acid deficiency can cause depression, anxiety, obsessiveness and compulsivity, exhaustion and high levels of stress, irritability and sudden violence, and muddled thinking and fogginess. Missing minerals can result in learning and behavioral disorders, inability to handle stress, irritability, confusion, personality changes, memory impairment, depression, chronic fatigue, violence, paranoia, aggressiveness, fearfulness, and manic-depression psychosis. Before you allow any doctor to prescribe antidepressants, I strongly suggest you seek out an orthomolecular doctor. These medical professionals are fully licensed medical doctors, but they have a different mindset. Instead of whipping out a prescription pad, they will likely do a battery of tests on you, to try to discover underlying causes for your complaints, such as specific deficiencies or sensitivities, under-functioning organs, toxins, parasites, etc. Then they will devise a treatment plan that may include nutritional supplements or lifestyle changes to help your body to cure your pain, instead of covering up symptoms with prescription drugs.
Honor Your Emotions
There are shelves of books written about how emotional hurts can be expressed in physical pain. I recommend you browse through some of the literature and see if something seems to resonate. Maybe your pain is a message of an unmet emotional need. This is often the case in situations where pain seems not to respond to any logical therapy.

For example, how are your social ties to other people? We are social beings. Humans were not meant to live in isolation. Whether they are a marriage mate, family, friends, volunteer groups, a religious affiliation or other relationship, people need to feel connected to other people. In fact, researchers have found that people with close social ties to other people, but who have unhealthy lifestyles (such as sedentary obese smokers) are likely to live longer than people who have healthy lifestyles but few social ties. The medical consequences of loneliness are real, even fatal. Friendship, love, and positive relationships can have strong healing effects. What is the quality of your relationships with others? Has your chronic pain caused you to be isolated from others? Or is it a message that your relationships with others are not what they should be. Either way, please give serious thought to how you can change this. But caution! While good relationships with others are deeply supportive of health, bad ones can do you considerable harm. Seek out relationships with people who will emotionally support you and encourage you, not toxic connections that drain your energy and leave you feeling bad.
